During the Battle of Midway, which lasted from June 4 to 7, RK Campbell piloted a two-man ??Scout Bomber Douglas?? ?? the Dauntless dive bomber ?? taking off from the USS Yorktown and dive bombing Japanese ships. Aboard the Yorktown were more than 100 planes, Campbell recalled. His plane carried four or five bombs, at about 100 pounds each. Inside the plane, ??It was just me, and the machine gunner in the back.?? He wasn??t alone in the air, but was flanked by a squadron of planes. Robert Campbell of Durham, celebrated his 101st birthday on Aug. 17, 2018 died 9-11-18. He was the last known surviving pilot of the Air Battle of Midway in World War II.
